What Engine Oil Does Chevrolet Use?
Chevrolet vehicles use engine oils that meet GM’s dexos specifications, but the correct oil depends on the engine, model year, and required viscosity. Chevrolet does not use one universal oil for every vehicle. Your Owner’s Manual provides the exact specification and viscosity for your engine.
Chevrolet recommends checking the required oil grade before every oil change. Five Star Chevrolet Florence can also help verify the correct oil for your vehicle and provide factory-recommended oil change service.
Understanding GM’s Dexos Oil Standard
dexos is GM’s set of engine oil specifications designed to meet the performance requirements of its vehicles. The required specification varies by engine type and application.
- dexos1: Used for many Chevrolet gasoline engines. dexos1 Gen 3 is GM’s current gasoline-engine oil specification and is available in multiple viscosity grades.
- dexosD: Used for certain light-duty diesel applications, including the 3.0L Duramax Turbo-Diesel in the Chevrolet Silverado 1500. GM states that dexosD replaced dexos2 for applicable light-duty diesel engines.
- Older dexos specifications: Some previous Chevrolet vehicles called for dexos2 or earlier generations of dexos1. Always follow the specification listed for your specific vehicle rather than assuming the newest specification applies.
Using the correct dexos specification and viscosity grade is important for proper engine protection and performance. Chevrolet recommends consulting your Owner’s Manual for the exact requirements.
Which Oil Type Fits Your Chevrolet Engine
Chevrolet engine oil requirements vary by engine and application. Many mainstream gasoline engines use GM-approved dexos1 oil, while certain diesel applications use dexosD. For many current Chevrolet engines, recommended viscosity falls within the 0W-20 to 5W-30 range, while performance applications such as the Corvette Z06 and ZR1 can require 5W-50. Always follow the oil specification and viscosity listed in your Chevrolet Owner’s Manual.
| Chevrolet Engine / Application | Oil Specification | Viscosity |
|---|---|---|
| 1.2L Turbo I-3 – Trailblazer | dexos1 | 5W-30 |
| 1.3L Turbo I-3 – Trailblazer | dexos1 | 0W-20 |
| 1.5L Turbo I-4 – Equinox | dexos1 | 0W-20 |
| 2.0L Turbo I-4 – Camaro | dexos1 | 5W-30 |
| 5.3L EcoTec3 V8 – Silverado 1500 | dexos1 | 0W-20 |
| 6.2L EcoTec3 V8 – Silverado 1500 | dexos1 | 0W-20 |
| 6.6L Gas V8 – Silverado HD | dexos1 | 5W-30 |
| Current C8 Corvette Z06/ZR1 | dexosR | 5W-50 |
The best way to determine the right oil for your Chevrolet is to check the Owner’s Manual or consult a Chevrolet Certified Service professional. Chevrolet also recommends ACDelco and Mobil 1 oils that meet the appropriate GM specification.
How Often Chevrolet Vehicles Need an Oil Change
How often your Chevrolet needs an oil change depends on your driving habits, operating conditions, and the vehicle’s Oil Life System. Rather than following the outdated “every 3,000 miles” rule, Chevrolet’s Oil Life System monitors engine conditions and driving patterns to determine when an oil change is needed.
Towing, frequent short trips, heavy stop-and-go driving, and extreme temperatures can cause the system to recommend service sooner. Following the system’s recommendations and using the correct GM dexos-approved oil can help maintain proper engine protection and performance over time.
