Best SUVs for Snow in 2022
An SUV is an excellent vehicle for snowy conditions. When you need to make sure you can get to work, the grocery store, and other common destinations in adverse weather, having an SUV in your driveway is a big advantage.
But which SUVs are best when the snow starts to fall? That’s the topic we’ll tackle in the article below. By picking an SUV that is going to be up to the challenge in tough winter weather, you’ll have more confidence hitting the road than ever before.

Chevy Blazer
This is a great place to start because it is a vehicle that has gotten a lot of attention in recent years. The versatile Blazer has some of the features that you like to see when thinking about driving in snowy conditions – like ground clearance and front-wheel drive – along with the many other characteristics that make it appealing to drive when the ground is clear. You probably aren’t going to go shopping for a Blazer solely because of its snow prowess, but it should do a good job of getting you around in such conditions.

Chevy Tahoe
When you think about vehicles that are adept in the snow, you usually don’t start by thinking of large SUVs. When a vehicle gets too big, it can be hard to maneuver in slippery conditions and it will be very difficult to get unstuck if you happen to find yourself off the roadway.
That said, the Tahoe is an SUV that can behave very nicely in snowy weather when driven properly. This capability is largely due to four-wheel drive. When conditions get slick, you can switch the vehicle into four-wheel drive mode and distribute power evenly out to all of the wheels. Using four-wheel drive doesn’t magically make the roads any less slippery, but it does help keep you moving forward and out of trouble.
Much like the Blazer, snow-driving ability alone is not a great reason to pick a Tahoe for your next vehicle. You’ll want to have other motivations to buy this big SUV as well – such as a house full of kids that you need to drive around to school, soccer practice, and beyond. If the Tahoe makes sense for your needs based on the whole package that it delivers, you are likely to be pleased with how it handles in the snow, as well.

Jeep Grand Cherokee
The name Jeep automatically brings to mind visions of vehicles that are excellent in the snow. The Grand Cherokee – while also bringing plenty of other benefits to the party – is adept at getting you through the snow without any drama. Like the Tahoe we discussed above, you can choose to get a Grand Cherokee with four-wheel drive to give yourself a leg up in difficult conditions. In fact, four-wheel drive will not only come in handy when the snow falls but also if you happen to venture off-road for any reason.

Chevy Traverse
In some ways, the Chevy Traverse tends to get lost in the shuffle within the Chevy SUV lineup. The Tahoe and Suburban are well-known models, prized for their sheer size and hauling capacity. For a whole generation of vehicle buyers, the need for plenty of passenger space has led to shopping for either a Tahoe or a Suburban. More recently, on the smaller end of the spectrum, the Blazer has gotten a lot of attention.
Sitting in the middle of those models is the Traverse, which is a reliable, versatile performer that can nicely meet the needs of many different buyers and families. It has plenty of seating for a large family, and offers some storage space in the back, but doesn’t quite have the same large footprint as the Tahoe and Suburban. There is an option to get a Traverse with all-wheel drive to help with snowy conditions, and there is also an off-road mode available to add even more grip.
When driving in the snow, there is no substitute for caution and good-decision making. No matter what vehicle you are driving, it’s always important to be smart and avoid taking unnecessary risks. With that said, having a vehicle that is up to the winter driving challenge will make things a lot easier, and any of the SUVs listed above will fit that mold.
