1. Choose an Electric Vehicle Home Charger

The first step of how to prepare your home for an electric vehicle is to choose the electric vehicle charging station you want for your garage. Currently, there are two types of electric vehicle home chargers available domestically: Level 1 and Level 2. Compare both below:

• Level 1 EV charging cables come standard with most electric vehicles. They can be plugged into any 120V three-pronged outlet in your garage. While they’re convenient, we don’t recommend them as a primary source for charging. They can take between 24 and 48 hours to charge your car. They are useful, however, for helping you build a background charge while you sleep in order to cut down on time spent at public electric vehicle charging stations.
• Level 2 EV charging stations can replenish your vehicle in several hours, but you’ll need to hire an electrician to install a 240V outlet and wire it to your power panel.

2. Ready Your Garage for an Electric Vehicle Charging Station

Once you’ve decided on which type of electric vehicle charging station you’d like to outfit your garage with, you’ll want to identify which space in your garage is optimal for charging. Clear out a space for your vehicle.

3. Find Your Power Panel & Assess Consumption

If you plan on hiring an electrician to install a 240V outlet, you’ll need to make sure that your power panel is compatible. That is to say, your power panel should feature a capability of at least 100 Amperes. If your current panel features less, you’ll need to replace your power panel.

4. Hire an Electrician

Now it’s time to hire an electrician to install your 240V outlet and wire it to your power panel. The electrician can also upgrade your power panel if necessary.

5. Buy and Install Your Electric Vehicle Home Charger

Once the electrician has outfitted your home with a 240V plug, it’s time to research and purchase a charger for your garage!
